By August of this year, Electrochem Ghana Limited will begin producing refined salt in commercial quantities, according to Dr. Daniel McKorley, Executive Board Chairman of the McDan Group. Members of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) visited the project site in Ada, Greater Accra, where the announcement was made.
Dr. McKorley stressed the company’s dedication to interacting with off-takers both domestically and abroad in his welcome address. He mentioned that natural salt will be produced for export by Electrochem, the biggest salt factory in Africa and a division of the McDan Group.

“We are constructing one of Africa’s largest refineries. It should be operational by August. Salt is a substance that is in great demand. We’ll start producing for the industry after we finish the refinery and the ports,” he said. He emphasized that the refinery’s success will be guaranteed by the need for industrial salt, pointing out that salt has many applications and is highly pure (99.9% sodium chloride), making it suitable for significant industrial use. The business intends to manufacture salt for local and overseas markets, selling to wholesalers instead of retail customers.

The AGI’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Tsonam Akpeloo, emphasized the value of backing major Ghanaian-owned companies like Electrochem Ghana Limited. “This is obviously a huge innovation, not just in Ghana but throughout Africa,” he said. Supporting big businesses like Electrochem Ghana is the only way we can benefit from the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.

With a 41,000-acre concession in Ada Songor, Electrochem Ghana can manufacture one million metric tons of salt annually for both local and foreign markets.
