The World Bank has declared that it expects Ghana to receive more donor assistance and private capital investment as a result of its recent disbursements. The Bank has disbursed more than $800 million since January, and more are anticipated before the year is out.
“I hope that the approval of these funds will encourage other donors to support Ghana’s economic recovery program,” said David Elmaleh, Senior Economist at the World Bank Group. “The World Bank’s approval of this operation is actually a recognition of the government’s reform programs and the fact that they are beginning to bear fruit,” he said.
Elmaleh went on to say that because of this assistance, the World Bank anticipates Ghana’s economy would soon recover. He promised that the Bretton Woods institutions will keep working together to support Ghana and other emerging nations. “The reforms we have backed will contribute to the nation’s progress and may garner additional support.” I believe that the World Bank as an organization is aware of how tough this crisis has been for Ghanaians. Together with our partners, we are doing everything we can to assist end this situation.
Elmaleh added that the World Bank anticipates government spending on projects that will lower poverty and generate employment.
