According to Dr. Beatrice Baaye, a physician specialist at Ghana’s Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the adoption of a Western lifestyle has caused a rise in the number of Ghanaians suffering from diabetes.

According to Dr. Baaye, Ghana has seen an increase in diabetes and obesity, which is consistent with patterns seen in western nations, as a result of adopting lifestyles similar to those in the West.

“In Ghana, we are copying everything, including their food,” she said on Monday’s JoyNews AM broadcast. We are all so busy that we don’t even have time to take care of ourselves, which is why there are so many junk meals available nowadays. For example, you might arrive at work at 7 a.m., be unable to have breakfast, arrive home at 10 p.m. or 8 p.m., eat, and then immediately fall asleep.

All of that is a result of living a sedentary lifestyle, and one risk factor is diabetes. I believe that all of these risk factors are contributing to the growth in diabetes in our nation because if you have any of them at night, you will eventually develop diabetes, especially if there is a family history of the disease.

Anthony Avege, a pharmacist at Trust Hospital, identified a number of variables, such as urbanization, aging populations, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles, that are causing an increase in the number of diabetes patients.

Mr. Avege voiced alarm about the rise in childhood obesity, pointing out that children’s inactivity has become a serious problem.

He contrasted younger generations who used to go to school and play more actively with those of today, who frequently rely on cars and spend time on computers.

Your children are taken to Accra for school while you are in Adenta; they sit in the car, close, sleep when they return home, and even eat there. On weekends, people spend their time on computers rather than exercising.

We used to walk to school and play soccer and other games when we got there, but these days everything is about computers and IT. “We are definitely at this point,” he said.
